DESCRIPTION Printed at the peak of the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography, this famous and influential map of the northeastern coast of North America was flattered by no fewer than twenty-seven copies published in Holland, England, and Germany by the end of the seventeenth century. It enjoyed phenomenal longevity, and was last published over a century after its first printing, by which time it was of little practical value. Jan Jansson, the son of a mapmaker and publisher, married into a leading Dutch publishing house. With his brother-in-law, he led the Hondius firm in a rivalry with the Blaeu publishing house that spurred Dutch mapmaking to its well deserved prominence.
